THE Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), on Tuesday, dashed the expectations of Nigerians, as it rose from its meeting and disclosed that debate on the issue of constitutional amendment is deferred till the fasting period ends.

Expectations were high on Monday among the people who hoped to know the stand of the governors, especially on the issue of state police.

The forum had, in its last meeting, unanimously agreed and subscribed to the  matter of state police before the Northern governors, in another meeting, said they were against it.

Also expected to be deliberated upon on Tuesday was the disagreement between the governors and the Federal Government over the establishment of Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) and the sharing of the excess crude deductions by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporations (NNPC) from the Federation Account, essentially to cover fuel subsidy.

The governors had earlier threatened to go to the Supreme Court to determine its legality on the matters.

But the Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr (Mrs) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, came in around 10.00 p.m to brief them on issues as it affected the economy.

The meeting, held at the Rivers State Government Lodge, Asokoro, presided over by Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, ended about few minutes to midnight.

Amaechi told reporters after the meeting that “the forum deferred debate on the issue of constitutional amendment until after the fasting period, when all members will be back.”
